mfSBA: Multifractal analysis of spatial patterns in ecological communities [version 1; referees: 2 approved with reservations]

Multifractals have been applied to characterize complex communities in a spatial context. They were developed for nonlinear systems and are particularly suited to capture multiplicative processes observed in ecological systems. Multifractals characterize variability in a scale-independent way within an experimental range. I have developed an open-source software package to estimate multifractal...

Why are neurotransmitters neurotoxic? An evolutionary perspective [version 1; referees: 2 approved with reservations]

In the CNS, minor changes in the concentration of neurotransmitters such as glutamate or dopamine can lead to neurodegenerative diseases. We present an evolutionary perspective on the function of neurotransmitter toxicity in the CNS. We hypothesize that neurotransmitters are selected because of their toxicity, which serves as a test of neuron quality and facilitates the selection of neuronal pa...

Quantitative trait loci mapping of dauer larvae development in growing populations of Caenorhabditis briggsae [version 1; referees: 3 approved with reservations]

The life cycles of many free-living nematodes contain developmental switches that allow individuals to either develop directly to adulthood, or to arrest development as a stress resistant and long-lived dauer larval stage. Here, in a panel of recombinant inbred lines derived from the Caenorhabditis briggsae isolates HK104 x AF16, we use methodologies developed for to map C.elegans quantitative ...
